The face is one of the first areas to show signs of aging: creases below the eyelids, sagging around the mid-face, loose skin underneath the chin or displaced fat or loss of muscle tone that creates jowls. Facelift is a surgical procedure designed to improve these signs and give the face a healthy, rested and youthful appearance.
You may be a suitable candidate for facelift or you might consider the procedure if:

You are in good mental and physical health
You have realistic expectations of surgery and understand the potential risks

If you’re considering facelift, ask yourself what your desired outcome is. It is reasonable to expect that after a facelift, you will look more youthful; but you will not look half your age.

Time and costs

Facelift is an outpatient procedure that takes only a few hours in theater. We can arrange for you to arrive in South Africa during the week end, attend consultation with the surgeon on Monday and have surgery performed on a Wednesday.

After surgery it is normal to experience some discomfort and soreness in the first few days, during which you will be accommodated in a recovery facility and followed 24/7 by our nurses.

Week 2 of your stay you will be available to travel and enjoy some of the country best scenery while you recover. We recommend to recover for at least two weeks before you can be dismissed back to your normal routine by the surgeon.

The cost of the procedure may vary significantly, according to your choice of procedure and materials used, but you can have some very good facelift done for as little as USD 4,500.

Preparing for Facelift

You will first need to meet with the plastic surgeon to discuss your expectations and desired outcome of facelift surgery. The surgeons will examine you and ask about your medical history, including any chronic conditions or medications that you take. You will be asked to refrain from smoking and taking certain medications, vitamins or supplements which could impair your surgical recovery. You may also be asked to have some lab testing done prior to your procedure.

The Day of Surgery

Facelift surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes several hours. After you arrive and are taken to the operating room, an anesthesiologist will administer medication to help you sleep comfortably during the procedure. You will not feel anything as the surgeons operate.

To begin surgery, the surgeon makes an incision beginning at the hairline near the temples and continuing around the ear to the lower scalp. The surgeon will redistribute fat from the face, jowls and neck, reposition the underlying tissue and lift the deeper layers of the face and neck.

The skin will be re-draped, and any excess skin will be removed. If the neck needs further improvement, a second incision may be made underneath the chin. The incisions will then be closed with sutures and the face will be bandaged with surgical dressings.

Recovering from surgery

In the days following your facelift surgery, it’s critical to rest and relax as much as possible. Refrain from any heavy lifting or exercise. Be sure to follow the instructions our surgeons give you regarding medications and caring for your incision area. The surgeon will want to see you for several follow-up appointments to check your healing progress. If you have any concerns during your recovery, or you notice something that seems irregular, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.

Other Considerations

Your facelift results will be long-lasting, but they will not stop the aging process. Many facelift candidates want to correct signs of aging around the eyes — for example, bags underneath the eyes or a droopy brow. Facelift surgery will not affect these issues, but it can be combined with another surgical procedure, Eyelid surgery, which is designed to improve the eyelids, eyebrows or another area of the face.
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be performed to tighten and lift the eyelids and smooth puffy under-eye bags. Brow lift surgery or forehead lift surgery will elevate the brows to a more youthful position. Facial implants can also add contour and definition to areas where fat has been displaced or you have noticed a loss of volume (e.g., the cheeks). Ask your plastic surgeon for more details about these procedures during your initial consultation.
Some candidates considering facelift choose to postpone surgery and elect for treatment with injectables such as Anti-aging or Dermal Fillers to ward off the effects of aging. If this sounds like a suitable option, inquire about the possibilities with our team.
